Multinational Experts Discuss Institutionalization of Deliberative Democracy in Tianjin

On 5 December, the International Conference on the Institutionalization of Deliberative Democracy was convened in Tianjin. The Conference was co-hosted by Faculty of Philosophy (Nankai University), Institute of Issues in Contemporary China (Nankai University), Deakin University (Australia), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). Experts, scholars and figures in the circles of politics and media from China, America, Australia and other countries joined the Conference. Issues discussed included the institutionalization of socialistic deliberative democracy with Chinese characteristics, the multilevel development of citizen consultation, the procedures and standards of public deliberation, the political and moral requirements of network deliberation, the comparison of Chinese and western deliberative democracy in theory and practice.

   Present at the Conference were Xing Yuanmin, deputy director of the Economic Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Luo Yuanpeng, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of Tianjin People’s Congress, Zhu Guanglei, vice president of Nankai University, and Chen Yanqing, chairman of the academic committee of Nankai Institute of Issues in Contemporary China. The opening ceremony also released the Chinese version of When People Speak: Deliberative Democracy & Public Consultation, a book authored by professor James S. Fishkin from Center for Deliberative Democracy in Stanford University.  

   The Conference was held for the study of socialistic deliberative democracy with Chinese characteristics, a key project of philosophy and social sciences of the Ministry of Education.
