Nankai University confers the title of Honorary Doctorate on Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam

At the invitation of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Singapore President Tony Tan Keng was in China from June 29th to July 4th. On July 1st, President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife Mary Tan visited Nankai University; Nankai University President Gong Ke conferred the title of Honorary Doctorate onTonyTan KengYam on behalf of the school. The degree awarding ceremony was held in the Oriental Art Building.

Prior to this, Nankai University provided eight Honorary Doctorates to eight Professors such as theChinese-American mathematician Shiing-Shen Chernthe Physicist Ta-You Wu, the Rector of Rice University David W. Leebron, and the Director of Cross strait Economic and Trade and Cultural Exchange Association Chiang Pin-kung, so that Tony Tan Keng was awarded the ninth Honorary Doctorate.

Throughout his visit Mr. Tony Tan Keng participated actively, giving a speech at “Zhou Enlai Forum" about Sino-Singapore relations and the Silk Road Economic Belt. According to the introduction of the Ambassador of Singapore Stanley Loh Ka Leung, this was the only public speech he gave in China.
